Shopify vs WooCommerce for Indian businesses (GST, payments, costs)

For an Indian business: choose Shopify if you want to sell without thinking about infrastructure and you are comfortable paying monthly for that. Choose WooCommerce if organic search is your main channel, your catalogue or pricing logic is unusual, or you want to own the whole stack. The details below are the ones that actually differ in India.

Most comparisons of these two are written for a US or UK store and skip the parts that decide it here: payment methods Indian customers actually use, cash on delivery, GST invoicing and the courier ecosystem. This one covers those first.

Cost, honestly

ShopifyWooCommerce
Platform feeMonthly subscription per storeNone, the software is free
HostingIncludedRs 3,000 - 25,000 / year, more at volume
Typical build cost (India)Rs 35,000 - 1,50,000Rs 40,000 - 1,25,000
Apps / pluginsOften monthly, adds up quicklyOften one-time or annual

MaintenancePlatform handles itYours: updates, backups, security

The honest summary: Shopify converts technical work into a predictable monthly bill. WooCommerce converts a monthly bill into technical work. Which is cheaper depends entirely on whether you have, or want to pay for, someone to do that work.

Payments: the India-specific part

Shopify Payments does not operate in India, so on either platform you are connecting an Indian gateway. Razorpay, PayU, CCAvenue and Cashfree all support both platforms and all give you UPI, cards, net banking and wallets.

Cash on delivery still matters for a large share of Indian orders outside metros. Both platforms support it. WooCommerce gives you finer control over the rules, such as restricting COD by pincode, order value or product category, without paying for an app. On Shopify the same control usually means an app subscription.

GST and invoicing

WooCommerce has a mature set of Indian GST plugins that handle CGST, SGST and IGST splits by place of supply, HSN codes on line items, and invoice formats your accountant will accept without complaint.

Shopify collects tax correctly but its default invoice is not a GST invoice in the Indian format. Stores here typically add an app or push orders into accounting software such as Zoho Books or Tally. It works well; just budget for the setup rather than discovering it at your first filing.

Shipping and couriers

Shiprocket, Delhivery, Blue Dart, Ecom Express and India Post all integrate with both platforms, usually via an aggregator. Label printing, pincode serviceability checks, NDR handling and tracking pages are solved problems on either side.

WooCommerce wins where shipping rules get unusual, such as weight-and-zone tables of your own design, or per-product handling charges. Shopify wins on setup speed: the standard flow is genuinely a few clicks.

SEO and content

If a meaningful share of your sales will come from Google rather than ads, this section decides it. WooCommerce sits on WordPress, so you get complete control over URLs, category structure, schema markup and a blog that is a first-class part of the site rather than a bolt-on.

Shopify imposes URL patterns you cannot change, and its blogging tools are basic. Plenty of Shopify stores rank well, so this is not disqualifying, but content-led stores are consistently easier to build on WooCommerce. Our SEO service works with both; the WooCommerce work is simply less constrained.

Where each one clearly wins

Pick Shopify if

  • You want to launch in weeks and sell, not administer software
  • Nobody in your team is technical and you would rather pay than manage
  • Your growth plan is paid social and marketplaces more than organic search
  • You need multi-currency and international selling handled for you
  • Uptime during a sale spike must not be your problem

See what that build looks like on our Shopify development page.

Pick WooCommerce if

  • Organic search and content are central to how you will sell
  • Your pricing, catalogue or COD rules are non-standard
  • You want no platform cut and full ownership of the stack
  • You already run a WordPress site and want the store inside it
  • You have, or will pay for, ongoing maintenance

See our WooCommerce development page for how we build and secure these.

What we actually recommend to clients

D2C brands under about 100 orders a month with no technical person: Shopify, almost always. The monthly fee is cheap next to the time it saves at that stage.

Manufacturers, distributors and anyone with a large or unusual catalogue: WooCommerce. The rules engines and the SEO control matter more than the convenience.

Brands doing serious volume with a content strategy: WooCommerce, properly hosted and maintained, because the compounding organic traffic outweighs the operational overhead.

Migrating later

Moving between the two is entirely normal and we do it regularly in both directions. Products, customers and order history all transfer. The part that needs care is the URLs: without a full redirect map you will hand back the search rankings you spent years earning. Treat a migration as a project with an SEO plan, not an export and import.

FAQ

Quick answers

Does Shopify support UPI and cash on delivery in India?

Yes to both. Shopify Payments is not available in India, so you connect an Indian gateway such as Razorpay, PayU or CCAvenue, which brings UPI, cards, net banking and wallets. Cash on delivery is available as a manual payment method and is widely used by Indian Shopify stores.

Which one is cheaper over five years?

WooCommerce is usually cheaper in software terms because there is no monthly platform fee, but it shifts cost onto hosting, maintenance and developer time. Shopify costs more per month and less in attention. For a store doing significant volume with no in-house technical person, Shopify often works out cheaper in total.

Can I get GST-compliant invoices on both?

Yes. WooCommerce has mature Indian GST plugins that handle CGST/SGST/IGST splits and HSN codes. Shopify handles tax collection natively and needs an app or an accounting integration for fully compliant invoice formats. Neither is a blocker; budget for the setup on Shopify.

Which is better for SEO?

WooCommerce gives you more control over URLs, schema and content structure, which matters if organic search is your main channel. Shopify is perfectly capable of ranking but imposes some URL structures you cannot change. For a content-heavy store chasing organic traffic, WooCommerce has the edge.
