Local SEO checklist for Ahmedabad businesses (21 steps)
Local SEO is mostly a completeness game. The businesses in the Ahmedabad map pack are rarely doing something clever; they are doing all of the basics, consistently, while their competitors do about half. Here is the full list, in the order we work through it.
This is the working checklist we use on client accounts. Work top to bottom: the early steps are prerequisites for the later ones paying off.
Part 1: Google Business Profile (steps 1 to 8)
1. Claim and verify the profile
Nothing else counts until this is done. If an old profile already exists, claim it rather than creating a second one; duplicate listings split your signals and are a common reason an established business ranks below a newer competitor.
2. Get the name, address and phone exactly right
Write your NAP once, in one format, and treat it as fixed. Your registered business name with no keywords bolted on, the address exactly as it appears on your utility bill, and one phone number. This exact string is what you will repeat everywhere else.
3. Choose the primary category carefully
Primary category is one of the strongest ranking factors in the map pack, and businesses routinely pick a vague one. Look at what the three businesses currently ranking for your main search use. Add secondary categories for genuine additional services, but do not pad the list.
4. Set hours, including holidays
Accurate hours, plus special hours for Diwali, Uttarayan and other closures. "Open now" filters are used constantly on mobile, and wrong hours produce exactly the review you do not want.
5. Write the description around what customers search
750 characters describing what you do, who for, and where, in plain language. Not a keyword list. Mention Ahmedabad and the areas you actually serve.
6. Add real photos, and keep adding them
Exterior shots so people can find the door, interior, team, products or work in progress. Real photos taken on a phone outperform stock imagery here. Add a few every month; profiles with recent photos get more interaction.
7. Fill in services and products
List each service with its own short description. This is free space to describe what you do in the words customers use, and most competitors leave it empty.
8. Post regularly
A short update every week or two: an offer, a completed project, a seasonal note. Individually minor, cumulatively a signal that the profile is maintained by a real business.
Part 2: reviews (steps 9 to 12)
9. Ask every satisfied customer, systematically
Not once in a while, every time, at the moment they are happiest. A short WhatsApp message with the direct review link works far better than a card or a verbal ask.
10. Never buy reviews
Bought reviews are detectable, get filtered, and put the whole profile at risk. The damage outlasts the benefit by years.
11. Reply to all of them, especially the bad ones
A calm, specific reply to a one-star review is read by every future customer and often matters more than the review itself. Replying also signals an active profile.
12. Keep them coming
Recency counts. Forty reviews with the newest from 2023 reads worse than fifteen with three from this month.
Part 3: citations and consistency (steps 13 to 16)
13. Build the core Indian citations
JustDial, Sulekha, IndiaMART where relevant to your sector, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, and your industry's association or directory listings. Use the identical NAP string from step 2.
14. Hunt down the inconsistent old listings
Search your phone number and your old address. Every listing with a former address or a disused number is a contradictory signal. Fix or remove them; this is dull work and it moves rankings.
15. Get listed where your customers already look
Sector-specific directories, supplier lists, local chamber and association pages. These are worth more than another generic directory profile.
16. Put the same NAP in the website footer
Identical string, sitewide, in real text rather than inside an image, with LocalBusiness schema marking it up.
Part 4: the website itself (steps 17 to 21)
17. Add LocalBusiness schema
Name, address, phone, hours, geo coordinates and area served, in structured data. This is how search engines and AI assistants read your details unambiguously. Our local SEO service includes this on every account.
18. Build a real page for each service
One page per service, each targeting one intent, each with genuine local context rather than the city name pasted into a template. A single page listing eight services will lose to eight pages doing one thing each.
19. Make it fast on mobile
Local searches are overwhelmingly mobile and often on patchy data. A site that takes six seconds loses the visitor before the map pack click is worth anything. See our development approach for what we target.
20. Add an embedded map and clear directions
A map embed on the contact page, plus the landmark-based directions Indian customers actually use. Small, and it reduces the number of "could not find it" calls.
21. Track what the profile is doing
Google Business Profile insights for calls, direction requests and website clicks, and Search Console for the queries bringing people in. Without this you cannot tell whether anything you did worked, which is how agencies get away with doing nothing.
Five mistakes that undo all of the above
- Keyword-stuffed business name. Works briefly, gets reported, ends in a suspension.
- Duplicate profiles. Splits reviews and signals; merge or remove them.
- A virtual office you do not staff. Against policy, and profiles get removed after you have built on top of them.
- Changing the NAP without updating citations. Move offices and you inherit months of contradictory listings.
- Treating it as a one-time setup. Local SEO decays. Competitors keep posting and collecting reviews; a profile last touched in 2024 slides down quietly.

FAQ
Quick answers
How long does local SEO take to work in Ahmedabad?
Profile fixes and category changes can move things within two to four weeks. Building enough consistent citations and genuine reviews to hold a map-pack position for a competitive term usually takes three to six months. Anyone promising the map pack in 30 days is either in an uncompetitive category or guessing.
Do I need a physical address to rank locally?
You need a real business location or a defined service area. Google requires either a staffed address customers can visit, or a service-area business with the address hidden. Renting a virtual office to fake a location is a policy violation and profiles get suspended for it, often after you have built everything on top.
How many reviews do I need?
There is no threshold, only relative standing. Look at the three businesses currently in the map pack for your main search, and treat their review count and recency as the bar. Steady new reviews matter more than a large old total.
Does adding "Ahmedabad" to my business name help?
It can help rankings in the short term and it violates Google’s naming guidelines. Competitors report it, profiles get edited or suspended, and you lose the position anyway. Use your real registered name and earn the location signal properly.
