How much does SEO cost in India? (2026 pricing benchmarks)
SEO retainers in India run from about Rs 8,000 a month for a small local business to Rs 1,00,000 or more for competitive national and eCommerce campaigns. The number matters less than what it buys: SEO is sold by the month but delivered in hours, and the hours are what you should be comparing.
Almost every SEO pricing article dodges the numbers. Here they are, along with the arithmetic that lets you tell whether a quote is realistic, which is a more durable skill than any price table.
Typical monthly retainers in India, 2026
| Scope | Typical monthly | Roughly what it buys |
|---|---|---|
| Local, single location, low competition | Rs 8,000 - 20,000 | GBP management, citations, on-page for a few pages |
| Local, competitive category | Rs 20,000 - 40,000 | The above plus content and ongoing technical work |
| National, small site | Rs 25,000 - 50,000 | Technical, content programme, link acquisition |
| National, competitive | Rs 50,000 - 1,25,000 | Full programme with a dedicated team |
| eCommerce | Rs 30,000 - 1,50,000 | Category and product optimisation at scale, feeds, technical |
| One-time technical audit | Rs 15,000 - 60,000 | Full crawl, prioritised fix list, often the fixes too |
These are our honest market estimates from quoting and losing quotes in this market since 2008. No third-party pricing survey is being cited, and any agency that shows you precise industry averages should be asked for the source.
The arithmetic that exposes an impossible quote
Competent SEO work in India costs an agency somewhere between Rs 800 and Rs 2,500 an hour to deliver, once you account for salary, tools, overhead and the fact that not every hour is billable. So:
- Rs 5,000 a month buys roughly two to four hours. Enough to update a profile and send a report.
- Rs 15,000 a month buys roughly eight to fifteen hours. A real local programme.
- Rs 40,000 a month buys roughly twenty to forty hours. Content and technical work at a meaningful pace.
Ask any agency how many hours a month their retainer includes and who does them. Vague answers here are the single most reliable warning sign in this industry.
What should be in the retainer, by tier
Local SEO, roughly Rs 8,000 to 20,000
Google Business Profile management including posts and photos, review generation support, citation building and cleanup, on-page optimisation of the main service pages, LocalBusiness schema, and a monthly report on calls, direction requests and rankings. Our local SEO service works to this scope, and the 21-step checklist is what gets worked through.
National SEO, roughly Rs 25,000 to 50,000
Technical audit and ongoing fixes, keyword research mapped page by page, two to four pieces of substantial content a month, internal linking, schema, digital PR or link acquisition, and monthly reporting against agreed keywords. See our SEO service.
eCommerce SEO, roughly Rs 30,000 to 1,50,000
Everything above plus category page optimisation at scale, product schema, faceted navigation and crawl budget control, feed hygiene, and duplicate content management across variants. Product count drives this price more than anything else.
What is not SEO, whatever the invoice says
- Directory submission packages. Bulk submissions to hundreds of low-quality directories stopped working over a decade ago.
- Bought links and PBNs. Cheap now, expensive when the penalty lands.
- Automated monthly reports nobody reads. A PDF of rank positions with no explanation of the work done is a fee for a screenshot.
- Guaranteed rankings. Nobody controls Google's output. A guarantee means either an uncompetitive keyword nobody searches, or a promise that will quietly go unmentioned.
- Traffic that never becomes enquiries. Rankings for terms your buyers do not use is a vanity metric with a monthly fee.
What actually drives your price up
- Competition. Real estate, education and finance cost several times what a niche manufacturer does.
- Geography. One city is far cheaper than all of India, which is cheaper than multi-country.
- Site size. A 10-page site and a 10,000-product store are different jobs entirely.
- Starting condition. A site with a clean technical base starts producing sooner than one needing six months of repair first.
- Content ownership. Whether the agency writes it or you supply it changes the retainer substantially.
SEO or ads first?
If you need enquiries this quarter, run ads; that is what they are for, and the data on which keywords convert makes the SEO work sharper later. If you are building an asset that keeps producing after you stop paying, that is SEO. Most clients we work with well run both, starting with ads for cash flow and SEO for compounding.
Our Google Ads service covers the first half, and the two are usually planned together.
Questions to ask before signing
- How many hours a month does this include, and who does them?
- Which keywords are we targeting, and why those?
- Will Search Console and Analytics be in my name, with my own access?
- What does the monthly report contain, and can I see a real anonymised example?
- What is the minimum term, and what happens if I stop?
- Who writes the content, and is it included in this price?

FAQ
Quick answers
Is a Rs 5,000 per month SEO package worth it?
At that price the agency can afford roughly two to four hours of skilled work a month. That is enough for a small local profile in a low-competition category, and nothing more. If it is sold to you as national SEO for a competitive term, the maths does not work and something is being faked.
Should I pay for SEO monthly or per project?
Monthly for ongoing work, because SEO compounds and stopping resets the momentum. A one-time technical audit and fix project makes sense as a starting point, or if you have an in-house team who will act on it. Be wary of one-time packages sold as a complete solution.
What should be in the monthly report?
Rankings for the agreed keyword set, organic traffic and how it changed, enquiries or conversions from organic, exactly what was done that month, and what is planned next. All of it should be verifiable in your own Search Console and Analytics, which must be in your name.
How long before SEO pays for itself?
For a local business in a normal category, typically four to eight months before organic enquiries cover the retainer. In competitive national or eCommerce categories, eight to eighteen. If you need leads next month, that is what ads are for; run both if the budget allows.
